St. Augustine

19th century?
St. Rupert's Church, Weißpriach, Austria

This is one of the portraits of the four Doctors of the Church on the pulpit at St. Rupert's. St. Augustine holds in his right hand the flaming heart that is a common attribute of his. As a bishop, he is pictured with mitre, crozier, and cope. The cope is much more plain than those we see in many solo portraits, where he is shown as he would have appeared to the monk who needed encouragement in his vocation.

The light rays descending to the saint's shoulder appear to be an innovation of the artist.
